Theme: Pilgrims of Hope

As Christians, it is imperative that we avoid attachment to worldly things. Jesus reminds us that although we are in the world, we are not of the world (John 14-16). To overcome the world’s allurements, attractions, beauty, and deceptions, we must recognize that we are on a journey. The world is not our destination but rather a means to our destination. We are “pilgrims of hope” moving towards heaven, our final destination. With this mindset, we will be vigilant and prepared for the Lord’s return.

In the second reading, Paul cautions us that the day of salvation is nearer than when we became members of the body of Christ. He instructs us not to make provision for the flesh. The flesh refers to any action that opposes God’s teachings and commandments (Galatians 5:19). To overcome the flesh, we must be in union with God (John 15:1-10).

Being in union with God means being intimate with the Father. Intimacy is fostered and sustained in the secret place, hence the alumni theme for this year 2025. To cultivate this intimacy, we must revive the practice of maintaining a daily quiet time with God. We must also ensure our hearts meditate on God throughout the day.

Beloved in Christ, without developing a close, healthy, and intimate relationship with the Father, we will be powerless against the world’s allurements, temptations, and seductions. As we begin a new year in the liturgical calendar, we ask the Lord to strengthen our weary hands and make firm our feeble knees, so as to keep the fire of our secret place burning.
